Matt and I stretched our legs a bit, taking advantage of the gorgeous weather San Diego has been having, and had our first training walk of the 2011 season. I have to admit, I still have one large blister from last year’s walk but fortunately it’s no longer painful so it doesn’t hinder me from walking any.
We walked around San Diego bay and the sun was so bright and the water so sparkling that I really realized how much I am going to miss the outdoor culture of San Diego. It’s such a wonderful city to do training walks in and I love being able to train on the actual hills that we walk on the 3-Day. I would love advice from others who train in cities other than the one they walk in. What are some good tips for staying motivated if you are training elsewhere?
I've found that occasionally doing training walks still with others in your area helps keep you motivated and the 3-Day spirit going even if you're doing your event in another area. Doing a good combination of hill and flat training also helpsl get you prepared for whatever another city's route throws your way. If you don't have hills, then compensate with indoor training, like on a Stepmill machine (the rolling staircase). Climate is another key item that can be tricky to prepare for if where you're training is different than the event city you'll be in. You do the best you can to learn during training, but keep an eye on weather conditions for where you're headed. If you have to train alone, keep an MP3 player handy to listen to music, podcasts, or even audio books, but of course be safe and aware of your surroundings!
ReplyDeleteI have never trained in the city I walk in :) You know the route, you know what to expect; just walk as much as you can and if you can go to a gym, get on a treadmill and use the incline like hills or if the new city you are living in has hills - EVEN BETTER :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice everyone! I have the advantage of already having walked in San Diego for the past two years. It will just take some getting used to to train in a new city. I'm looking forward to finding new places to walk and train though. Hopefully I can find some new walking buddies soon too!
